Grandma (Ruth Brotherton) always seemed to be a very stern-faced,matronly sort of woman who always wore cotton dresses and glasses. Sherarely smiled or laughed in stark contrast to Grandpa (Pearl Brotherton)who was quick with a grin. I'm certain she must have had many finequalities because Grandpa was married to her for almost 50 years.
Reserved in many ways, food and cooking were obviously her joy in life,and she relished in the cooking and serving of large meals. She oftensaid that her parents were German, and the foods she prepared certainlyreflected that heritage. Sauerkraut was a common item on the table withpork ribs, chocolate cakes (German style, of course) and sausages ofdifferent varieties.
My favorite item was her chicken and dumplings, and the recipe andpreparation process remain a closely-guarded family secret to this day.To certain family members (daughters and daughters-in-law), this recipecould be handed down, but with the instruction that it must never berevealed to "outsiders." These dumplings are a bit of heaven on earth,not these doughy dropped balls into chicken stew, but melt-in-your-mouththin strips of rolled dough, seasoned delicately and always a treat tohave on your plate.
