The following is as told by my Uncle Dick Cowman in 1998 (items inparentheses are mine--Linda K. Channel):

J.H. Cowman (Dick's father) was working as a fireman on a railroad inColorado Springs when he married Nellie Shaver in 1904. Nellie was fromWashington. In about 1905, when Dick was a baby, there was what UncleDick referred to as a "Black Plague" (probably a flu epidemic), and J.H.and Nellie moved to Galveston, Texas, to get away. While in Galveston,they raised peanuts for hogfeed. Dick told about how he once ate greenpeanuts and "they didn't do me any good!"

(This is a guess, but I believe their daughter, Louise, was born inGalveston sometime during 1906 to 1908. She died when she was about 2years old.) Dick said he didn't remember her. Mildred and Mabel, twins,were born in Galveston in 1909. Mabel died at birth.

In 1910, there was a "big storm" (no doubt a tornado). J.H. and Nellieput Dick, who was about 6 years old at the time, under a haystack forprotection during the storm. Shortly after that, the family moved toExcelsior Springs, Missouri, and J.H. ran a store (Dick didn't rememberwhat kind it was). After J.H. and Nellie moved from Galveston, Texas,oil was struck on his land! Another daughter, Ethel, was born in 1911.J.H. and Nellie were divorced in about 1912. He married again, someonenamed Ethel from Excelsior Springs. Then J.H. moved to Kansas City,Kansas. He divorced again and married Eva "Paddy" Paddington. He andPaddy lived in Colorado Springs until their deaths.

Eva (Paddy) B. Paddington 1 was born in 1877/1897. She died in 1898/1981. She married John (J. H) Hale Cowman in 1898/1931.

Nellie Shaver's death certificate (State of Idaho, Bureau of VitalStatistics) states she died of "uraemia, cardiovascular renal disease."

Nellie carried the mail from Crane, Oregon (near the Nevada border), toDenio, Oregon, in a model-T Ford and on horseback in the early 1920'swhile she was married to Walter Ross. One of her daughters, Mildred EttaCowman, rode on horseback to attend school in Andrews, Oregon.
