After they were married in 1938, Dick and Sophie operated the store andhotel Dick built in Big Creek in 1934 and 1936. In 1941, they plantedthe first of their lifetime of gardens using 51 wheelbarrow loads ofblack soil they hauled from the mountainside. They left Big Creek in1946 and bought a 10-acre farm on Roe Lane, 3 miles east of Eagle, Idaho.
In 1964, they purchased 40 acres in Eagle and built a new home there.They lived there until the late 1980's or early 1990's, when they werecompelled to sell their land to make room for a new highway, and moved toBoise, where Sophie, 90 at the time of this writing (1999,) still keeps amarvelous garden.
