James Lawrence Thompson was born and reared in the old homestead 2 mileswest of Pine Grove Mills, Centre Co., Pa. He went to Philipsburg, Pa.,about 1820, where he was employed as a charcoal burner by the PhilipsFactory. In 1821, he married Catherine Gearhart. In about 1834, he wentto Strattonville, Clarion, Pa., and burned charcoal for the MadisonFurnace for 2 years. In 1836, he moved to Jefferson Co., near Sigel,Pa. In 1839, he moved to Armstrong Co., Pa., where he did carpenteringfor a time and spent a year burning charcoal. Later he moved to Phoenix,Armstrong Co., Pa., where he built boats for the Pittsburgh market. Hiswife Catherine died there and was buried in the Methodist churchyard atDayton, Pa. In 1854, he married Rebecca Ann Layton in Dayton. In 1859,he sold the home he had built to Archibald Glenn, his sister Mary's son.James built flatboats for the firm of Glenn & Hileman. In 1860, he movedthe family to West Decatur, Clearfield Co., Pa., where his second wifedied in 1865. In 1870, he married Susan Hanna, who survived him. Hedied in his West Decatur home and was buried in Old Peeks Graveyard (2miles west of Pine Grove Mills) in West Decatur, Clearfield Co.,Pennsylvania.
