A TRIP TO THE COUNTRY: I (Lisa Christine Brotherton) remember a visitthat my parents (Harold Brotherton & Helen Moses) and I made to visitUncle Harvey and Aunt Emma Brotherton the summer of 1975, who were mydad's uncle and aunt. Uncle Harvey was a brother of my grandfather,Pearl Brotherton.
The trip by car from Doe Run, Missouri to Patton, Missouri was quitelengthy by my recollection. To the best of my 10-year-old judgment, total travel time was six years, although my dad insists it was only afew hours. What did he know? He was only doing the driving--I was theone doing the riding in the back seat! In my memory and in reality, thatarea of Bollinger County becomes very rural and remote in nature.
These Brotherton relatives had a charming farm with an old, two-storyhouse that had a huge front porch with a swing. You could enjoy the nicebreeze, relax in the swing and watch the occasional car whiz by on thehighway. They didn't have air conditioning and seemed not to care aboutthe luxury of adding it to their lives.
Dad tells me that his uncle and aunt were carpenters and woodworkers bytrade, and farmers by hobby. Their little farm had a smattering of smalllivestock: chickens, ducks, and a few head of cattle. There was a smallpond that they kept stocked, and we had an entertaining time fishing fromlawn chairs. We didn't catch anything, but I remember having a reallygood time in the attempt.
For lunch, Aunt Emma laid out a spread of food in such quantity andvariety that it would rival some "all you can eat" buffets. I found manyof my favorites that I enjoyed on my Grandma Brotherton's table in FlatRiver (now named Park Hills), which is probably because Aunt Emma shareda similar German heritage.
Their daughter, Sonja, lived with them even though she was near 40 at thetime. Never married, she was "special" and mildly mentally retarded. Aplump woman with dark hair and glasses, she wore simple cotton dressesand white socks with dark shoes. Very shy, she spoke very little, butsmiled often. Her gentle nature is something I will always rememberabout her.
Aunt Emma made most of the clothing her family wore, except for the biboveralls that were some of Uncle Harvey's favorites. She was a giftedseamstress and could create nearly any article of clothing using a Singertreadle-type sewing machine and a photograph of the garment. I rememberher showing Mom and me some "works in progress" pinned to a cloth paddeddressmaker's form, and they looked very much like what was in the retailstores at the time. She presented some finished items which wereidentical to some items in the Sears catalog. She did all of thiswithout the benefit of commercial patterns. "I just see the pattern inmy mind," she explained.
During this visit, we made a trip to the old Post Oak Church in BollingerCounty. Many Brothertons and related families are buried there. UncleHarvey was a deacon there, and his family was very rooted in theirreligious lives, no doubt due to his strong faith.
