Mary Geneva Declue was born during a winter blizzard. It was the customof the time that newborns not leave the home for two weeks in the beliefthat their immune systems were not yet developed enough to be "inpublic." Plus, superstition says it's "bad luck" for the child.

Baby Girl's aunt Eula wanted very much to see her and her mother (Zula,Eula's twin), but the weather was such that the trip was impossible.During a break in the weather, Eula arrived at the DeClue home todiscover that the baby had died several days prior to her visit. Zulawas greif-stricken, and was unable to even display to her sister the tinybody of her daughter. On his own, Farris DeClue had taken the infant'scorpse to the Scott-Goodson cemetery, dug a hole and buried the tinybody, marking the small grave with an unmarked stone.

The family was dumbfounded and angered at such an unfeeling act, withFarris disposing of the body as if it were no more than garbage.

Virgil Moses was outraged and told his brother-in-law, "I can't believeyou did that, Farris. You never even told anybody. We should have giventhat baby a decent Christian burial."

Farris calmly replied, "Why? It was only a baby."

Virgil never spoke to Farris again, and avoided the man whenever he could.

In later years, Doris DeClue pooled funds with family members so that amarker could be placed at the grave, stating that her baby sister shouldat least have a proper grave site since she had been deprived of afuneral by her father.
