DAVID JOHNSON
Classically trained on the violin, David
Johnson was studying at the University of Iowa until he heard a
Bill Monroe Record, and dropped out . . .
He played in a road group, performing Barbara Streisand tunes/Irish fiddle tunes/Bluegrass and Swing, before moving to Charlotte, North Carolina where he landed the house gig at "Country City U.S.A." in March, 1981. David played in the Country City U.S.A. house band backing a young singer by the name of Randy Traywick, until Traywick left for Nashville in early '82.
Randy Traywick changed his name to Randy Travis, got a record deal, and called for his old friend David Johnson to play fiddle for him once again when it came time to tour. That was in July of '86, and David has been playing fiddle for Randy Travis ever since.
